THE EXPANDING MALL

an audio/visual installation by Jennifer Protas and Karni Dorell

THE EXPANDING MALL is a spectacular audio/visual panorama in which coincidence and randomness play an important role. The installation is a collaboration between Americans Jennifer Protas (visual artist, based in Amsterdam) and Karni Dorell (visual artist, based in New York).

THE EXPANDING MALL came into being in a truly transatlantic way: via internet images were exchanged, concepts were communicated.
And the story goes somewhat like this:

Modern times. Ah! these wonderful, gruesome, dancing, swaying modern times in which ‘more is more’ is the creed. Living in a world that has developed into an ever expanding mall in which nature, air and privacy have become luxury commodities. Meanwhile reality shows itself as a multi-layered picturebook. Like geologists we have to mine the strata for meaning – but every layer presents a different meaning, leaving us increasingly lost and floating in a wealth of information. We’re falling. Falling and hovering from layer to layer. What else to do but whistle and hum melancholic melodies that stick in our heads while we wonder and struggle along?
